Stump Grinding & Removal in Cairns

A tree might be gone, but a stump left in the ground is a problem that hangs around — and in Cairns, it doesn't sit quietly. Warm, wet soil means a leftover stump can sucker back to life, rot down into a termite haven, and stay a trip hazard and mower-killer for years. We grind and remove stumps right across the Cairns region, from a single palm stump on a Trinity Beach block to a row of old hardwood stumps on a Gordonvale property.

Why you don't want to leave a stump in Cairns

Down south an old stump might just slowly weather away. Up here the tropical conditions work against you:

  • Regrowth and suckering. Many local and self-seeded species — African tulip is the classic offender — push fresh shoots up from a live stump and root system. Our climate makes them persistent.
  • Termites near the house. A decaying stump full of moist timber is exactly what termites are looking for, and you don't want that party starting a few metres from your slab.
  • Rot and fungus. In the humidity, stumps break down into soft, fungal-prone material that's unsightly and unstable.
  • Hazards that don't go away. A stump is a permanent trip risk, a hidden obstacle for the mower, and a dead spot in the lawn or garden bed.

Grinding the stump out deals with all of that in one visit.

Grinding vs full removal — which you need

Stump grinding is the usual choice. A grinder chips the stump down to well below ground level — typically 200–300mm, deeper if you're turfing or building — and the remaining roots break down naturally in the soil. It's fast, far less disruptive to the surrounding lawn and garden, and leaves you a hole you can backfill and plant over.

Full stump removal digs the stump and major roots out completely. It's more invasive and tears up more of the yard, so we generally only recommend it when you're laying a slab, building, or the root system is genuinely interfering with footings, paving or pipes.

We'll look at the stump, the species, where it sits and what you're planning for the spot — then recommend the right approach rather than the bigger invoice.

Roots in saturated tropical soil

Cairns root systems are their own challenge. Fast-growing species like figs, raintrees and poincianas put down wide, vigorous root plates, and after months of saturated wet-season soil those roots spread shallow and far in search of stability. That's part of why so many local trees lift driveways and paths — and why a stump's root network can be more extensive than the trunk suggests.

Knowing how these species root means we grind to the right depth and spread for the job, and can advise when roots near a slab, pool or service line need a closer look before you build over the spot.

What affects the price

Stump work is quoted after we've seen it, because a stump's size on the surface doesn't always tell the whole story. The main factors:

  • Stump diameter — the wider the stump, the more grinding.
  • Species and timber hardness — dense hardwood stumps grind slower than soft palm or softwood.
  • Number of stumps — several on one visit is more efficient than one-offs.
  • Access — can the grinder get to the stump, or is it behind a narrow gate or up a bank?
  • Depth required — deeper for building or paving than for replanting grass.
  • Grindings and clean-up — whether you want the mulch left for the garden or carted away.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal? Grinding chips the stump down to well below ground level and leaves the roots to break down naturally — it's faster and tidier. Full removal digs out the stump and major roots entirely, which is more invasive and usually only needed when you're building, paving, or the roots are interfering with footings or pipes. We'll tell you onsite which your situation calls for.

Will the tree grow back if I just leave the stump? In Cairns, often yes. Many tropical and self-seeded species — African tulip especially — sucker back from a live stump, and the warm wet climate encourages it. A left stump can also rot, attract termites near the house, and stay a trip hazard for years. Grinding it out stops the regrowth.

How deep do you grind the stump? Usually around 200–300mm below the surface, which is enough to replant grass or garden over. If you're laying turf, pouring concrete or building, we can go deeper — just tell us what's going on the spot.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding uses a machine to chip the stump down to well below ground level, leaving the roots to break down naturally in the soil — it's faster, tidier and less disruptive to your yard. Full stump removal digs out the stump and major roots entirely, which is more invasive and usually only needed when you're building, laying a slab, or the roots are interfering with pipes or footings. We'll tell you onsite which one your situation actually calls for.

Will the tree grow back if I just leave the stump?

In Cairns, often yes. Many tropical and self-seeded species — African tulips are a notorious example — will throw up suckers from a live stump and roots, and a warm, wet climate only encourages it. A left stump can also rot, attract termites close to the house, and stays a trip and mower hazard for years. Grinding it out stops the regrowth and removes the problem.

How deep do you grind the stump?

For most purposes we grind to roughly 200–300mm below the surface, which is enough to replant grass or garden over it. If you're laying turf, pouring concrete or building, we can go deeper — just tell us what's going on the spot so we grind to the right depth for the job.
